Yes, I have acne.

It’s true, I do, somedays are worse than others too.

Bad rhymes aside, the problem is real. My face is all kinds of red and white patchy. I’ve had acne pretty much as long as I can remember. It started with just one or two on my chin when I was about 11, and as I got older, it became more of a mild cystic kind of situation.

Which (granted) I did make worse by getting frustrated and spending hours trying to squeeze a ball full of hot pain out of my face. So now, I’m left with acne scarring, as well as mild acne.

I used to be extremely self conscious going out in public without makeup on, and to some that might sound ridiculous, but acne has such a negative stigma attached to it. Like, you’re dirty or you don’t wash properly. I am still a little self conscious, but I can go up the street with a bare face, which I would have refused to do previously.

I feel like I’ve tried it all – from the full-of-chemicals, expensive, three step solutions like Proactiv and Clinique, to the au naturale, organic, fancy stuff like Sukin and Rosehip-Oils and all of them made my skin break out even worse.

My Skin Type

When I go into places that want to trial products on my face, I get nervous. I’d identify my skin as sensitive-combination to oily – WTF, right?

Sensitive, because I get red and splotchy quite easily, and break out like no tomorrow if my skin doesn’t like something.

Combination-oily, because I have dry patches on my face, particularly around my nose, that flake, but oily because after a day at work without blotting, or applying powder, you could use my face as a mirror.

My Makeup Routine

So far I have found makeup products that work for my skin – that is, doesn’t make it any worse than it already is.

Currently I use, in this order;
– Palmers Coconut Oil Facial Mosituriser – applied with fingers
– Too Faced Hangover Primer – applied with fingers
– L’Oreal Infallible 24hr Matte Foundation – applied with brush
– Bourjois Healthy Mix Concealer – patted in with fingers
– NYX Gradient Blush
– Stila Bronzer
– Becca Highlighter
– Australis Banana Powder
– Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

The quest has begun for the holy grail of skincare and scar erasing that works for me, stay tuned for beautiful photos of my uneven, bumpy, splotchy, porous skin, as I take you on this journey with me.
